C3 vs C4 Bearing Clearance: What to Confirm Before Replacement
C3 and C4 identify internal-clearance classes, but they are not interchangeable labels. The appropriate clearance depends on the bearing design, fit, temperature, load and mounting arrangement, so replacement must be checked against the full existing designation and application.
Why clearance is part of the bearing identity
Internal clearance affects how a bearing behaves after it is mounted. Fits and operating temperature can change the clearance in service. That is why a basic number without its clearance suffix may not be enough for a replacement decision.
In pelletizing applications, a high-load or heat-affected position may have different requirements from a motor or conveyor position. Do not treat a C3 or C4 suffix as a marketing choice.
What to confirm before changing clearance
Record the original full designation, mounting method, bore type, shaft and housing fit, lubrication method and operating observations. If the existing bearing has a clearance suffix, do not remove or substitute it without technical confirmation.
If the original marking is incomplete, send a photo and the machine position rather than assuming the suffix from a similar reference.
A safer enquiry workflow
Send the complete marking, equipment position and any drawing or inspection note. SXM can review a replacement option once the configuration is clear. Detailed confirmation is preferable to an unsupported 'direct equivalent' claim.
- Existing bearing number including suffixes
- Bearing position and operating environment
- Fit or bore information if known
- Photo, drawing or sample
- Any history of heat, vibration or abnormal wear
Frequently asked questions
Can I replace C3 with C4 because the machine runs hot?
Not automatically. Temperature is only one factor; the complete bearing arrangement must be reviewed.
Does the basic bearing number tell me the clearance?
No. Clearance is normally shown by a suffix, so the full designation matters.
Next step: confirm the existing reference
For a replacement request, send the bearing marking, machine position, quantity, drawing or photos. SXM will review the available information before confirming a practical replacement option.
